On the degree of dust extinction in major galaxy mergers with dusty starburst

چکیده
We numerically investigate how fundamental properties of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a major gas-rich galaxy merger with dusty starburst are determined by the initial orbital configuration of the merger. We found that an infrared luminous galaxy with dusty starburst formed by a nearly retrograde-retrograde merger suffers the most remarkable dust extinction of stellar light and consequently shows very red colours. Considering that a retrograde-retrograde merger does not produce strong and long tidal tails, this result suggests that a luminous infrared galaxy without clear signs of interaction and merging shows very large internal dust extinction and redder colours. These numerical results furthermore imply that the morphology of a luminous infrared galaxy can correlate with the degree of internal dust extinction and thus with the shape of the SED, principally because the morphology of a merger also depends strongly on the initial orbital configuration of the merger. Based on these results, we discuss the origin of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies.

Contribution of starburst mergers at z ∼ 1 to the strong evolution of infrared and submillimeter deep surveys
Recent far-infrared and submillimetre waveband observations revealed huge amount of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIGs) with infrared luminosities > 10 L⊙. These sources are proposed to lie at redshift above one, and normally interacting systems with very dusty environments. We discussed in a previous paper that a population of fast evolving infrared burst phase triggered by gas rich merger...
متن کاملAre E+A Galaxies Dusty-Starbursts?: VLA 20cm Radio Continuum Observation
E+A galaxies are characterized as a galaxy with strong Balmer absorption lines but without any [OII] or Hα emission lines. The existence of strong Balmer absorption lines means that E+A galaxies have experienced a starburst within the last <1-1.5 Gyr. However, the lack of [OII] or Hα emission lines indicates that E+A galaxies do not have any on-going star formation. Therefore, E+A galaxies are ...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملAn Origin of the Huge Far-infrared Luminosity of Starburst Mergers
Recently Taniguchi and Ohyama found that the higher CO to CO integrated intensity ratios at a transition J=1–0, R = I(CO)/I(CO) ∼ > 20, in a sample of starburst merging galaxies such as Arp 220 are mainly attributed to the depression of CO emission with respect to CO. Investigating the same sample of galaxies analyzed by Taniguchi & Ohyama, we find that there is a tight, almost linear correlati...
متن کاملThe Dust Temperature of the “ Dusty ” Radio Galaxy MG 1019 + 0535 : Evidence for an Outflow
Radio galaxies characteristically have strong Lyα emission lines. However, a few have Lyα equivalent widths that are substantially weaker in relation to other emission lines. One in particular was studied by Dey et al. (1995), MG 1019+0535 (z = 2.765). We report on our reduction of Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) data in the 160 µm-band for this galaxy. We also compile information on two other...
